“Let us hurry to gather our flowers
Before they are plundered by the passing winds
It quickens our blood and brightens our eyes
To snatch kisses that would vanish
If we delayed”
#forlovers
a poem for you.
some mornings
just above the crackle
of nina’s voice on vinyl,
i hear you whisper you miss me.
the way we miss things
we could never quite hold.
i pretend not to notice
your body dripping wet
from the seas you braved to get here.
never reaching for my hand,
your arms stretched towards the warmth of other suns
near and far
from the truth saddled between
our hope and resistance
let us rewrite this story
of sunsets in strange places
photographs and secrets
seeping from the knee of your
stonewashed jeans
let’s begin here.
rewind the shattering of our best intentions
against exposed brick walls
right
there
before these paths paved in fool’s gold
melted like popsicles in children’s palms
beneath the mid-Summer sun.
sticky-sweet memories we hold near
to spite the muted versions of ourselves
we said we’d never become.
but this is not a poem
on how past becomes prologue.
this
is a poem about
how you conquer me
in the space between my
fantasy and reality.
for how you haunt me,
come for me
even in my deepest slumber
to remind me
of the very reason
i must wake.
this
is a poem
for you.
when the honeymoon is over…
who will protect us
from the tarnished portrait
of ourselves
we will remember in retrospect
haiku 1
i have died and dreamed
myself back to your arms where
what i died for sleeps.
(c) sonia sanchez
the afternoon unfolded into a blossom of loving from which she rose to me like a flame.
